A Plea for the Printer

Since 1992 when we opened our first shop, Wessel & Lieberman have been ardent supporters of the Pacific Northwest book art scene.

We consistently go out of our way to make sure local printers, binders, book artists and publishers have a forum and a space to show and sell their work. It is our duty as an independent bookseller to exude a strong sense of place. It is what separates us from the chain stores and the online aggregators whose only real concerns are the wrong kind of margins
– profit not page.

I got news a few days ago that C. Christopher Stern of Stern & Faye, Printers was diagnosed with cancer. He has already endured two surgeries and who knows what other treatments, surgeries etc. lay ahead for him.

I have known Chris since we started this book journey almost 15 years ago, he has printed numerous broadsides for us over the years and we have hosted events for many of his projects. He is one of the titans of Northwest printing.

By being a full-time printer I can assume that Chris is under-insured and faces not only a long recovery but quite possibly a financial disaster. Only guessing but almost certain.

So here is my Plea for the Printer – Buy His Work – here are some links to the numerous books and prints that are still available. There are also copies available of the book Chris printed and illustrated for Red Butte Press by noted green architect William McDonough; Something Lived, Something Dreamed: Urban Design and the American West. If you see something of interest let us know. Please don’t try and order it through the Stern & Faye website, they have enough to worry about. We will make certain all proceeds go his way.
Note: there are some broken image links on the Stern & Faye website, if you have an interest and would like to see an image let us know.
