The Book Fool: “Depicting love, folly, use and abuse of books in a grotesque manner”

  In 1934 the folks at The American Book Collector saw these images in an issue of the German magazine for book lovers, "Zeitschrift for Bucherfreunde." They quickly wrote to the German publisher and received permission to reprint the images which they did as a supplement to The American Book Collector titled The Book Fool: Bibliophily in Caricature. "Depicting love, folly, use and abuse of books in a grotesque manner" the supplement merely scratches the surface of book imagery from just after 1500 to the middle of the nineteenth century. Illustrating the Natural World

   Robert Hooke’s Micrographia (1667) Last holiday season the American Museum of Natural History published Natural Histories: Extraordinary Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History. A book which allowed readers "a privileged glimpse of seldom-seen, fully illustrated scientific tomes from the American Museum of Natural History's Rare Book Collection."  From Marcus Bloch's 12-volume encyclopedia of fishes (1782-1795) Now they are following up the book's success with a year-long exhibition, Natural Histories: 400 Years of Scientific Illustration from the Museum’s Library, focusing on images that were created in pursuit of scientific knowledge and to accompany important scientific works in disciplines ranging from astronomy to zoology....

Finn Dean’s illustrations for ‘Brave New World’ take top prize

Finn Dean has won this year's Book Illustration Competition. The annual event, co-sponsored by the non-profit House of Illustration and The Folio Society, invites artists and illustrators from around the world to focus their energies on illustrating the same book. This year over 500 entrants from 30 countries were asked to illustrate Aldous Huxley's classic Brave New World. Deans winning set of illustrations will be published in a new Folio Society edition of Brave New World due out in September. h/t with more photos from the finalists at Creative Review
