Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends in the U.S. and we wish everyone, wherever you are, a peaceful holiday season.
While you are enjoying the festivities here are a few Thanksgiving-related goodies from the book world.
Above is the original proclamation “For a Day of Thanksgiving, Praise and Prayer.” A new national holiday declared by Abraham Lincoln in 1863!
And who knew L. Frank Baum produced a 27-part comic strip series, Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz, which ran weekly from 4 Sep 1904 to 26 Feb 1905 to fuel demand for his second Oz book? Not me.
How the Wogglebug Got a Thanksgiving Dinner was the fourteenth strip in the series and the third featuring the Woggle-Bug.
Then there’s Mary Marcy’s socialistic Thanksgiving satire “Skinny’s Turkey Dinner.” in its entirety in The International Socialist Review, 1909.
And finally, a Pilgrim with Rifles, an original letterpress copper plate mounted on wood block, ca. 1930s. from an unknown artist
Happy Thanksgiving!
