Here is one for spreading the love this holiday season.
Some groups are calling for a boycott of the Chapters and Indigo bookstores in Canada. Seems like the majority owners support a charity for soldiers in the Israeli Army called Heseg the Foundation for Lone Soldiers
Isn’t a portion of the proceeds from the current government bestseller by the Iraq Study Group going to a charity to help our soldiers families? So if I am against the war and all its collateral damage should I not buy the report?
and while we are taking some leaps- since the conservative Rupert Murdoch owns the News Corporation which owns the publisher HarperCollins should one not be buying any books under that imprint?
We can go on and on…
If you are considering boycotting them because of where they donate their money you have already missed the boat. If most of us were sticking to our guns and supporting our independent bookstores we wouldn’t be shopping there in the first place- We would already be boycotting the giant corporate booksellers.
and since we mentioned our preference for independents-
Reuters just ran an article: “Competition Killing Independent U.S. Bookstores”. Nothing original here just rehashing the recent news about the last round of independent bookstore closings.
Don’t you think it should be titled “Corporations Killing Independent U.S. Bookstores” Appropriate competition is actually healthy for the bookselling community. A proper network of booksellers in a region can supplement each other and greatly enrich the region and communities they serve while the chain book retailers vacuum out the character and charm.
